How to copy files that have too long of a filepath in Windows?

Copying files with too long of a file path can be a tricky problem for IT administrators. The issue is that the Windows File System (NTFS) has a 255 character limit for file paths, and some files may have paths that exceed that limit. This can cause problems when trying to copy the file, as Windows will not allow the file to be copied due to its path being too long.

Fortunately, there are a few methods that can be used to successfully copy files with too long of a file path. The first is to use the “subst” command. This command allows IT administrators to create a virtual drive letter for a directory, which can then be used to access the files in that directory. This method can be used to shorten the path of the file so that it fits within the Windows File System’s character limit.

Another method is to use a third-party file transfer program such as WinSCP. This program can be used to connect to remote systems and transfer files over an FTP protocol. This method allows IT administrators to bypass the Windows File System’s character limit because the file path is not stored on the local computer.

Finally, IT administrators can also use the “robocopy” command. This command can be used to copy files from one directory to another, and it is capable of copying files with paths that exceed the Windows File System’s character limit.

In summary, IT administrators can successfully copy files with too long of a file path by using the “subst” command, a third-party file transfer program such as WinSCP, or the “robocopy” command. Each of these methods can be used to bypass the Windows File System’s character limit and successfully copy the file.
