How do you create an empty file from the command line in Windows

As an IT administrator, it is important to understand how to create an empty file from the command line in Windows. This is a useful skill to have as it can help streamline many of the tasks associated with managing large networks. By having the ability to quickly create an empty file, administrators can save time and resources, as well as potentially increase system security.

To create an empty file from the command line in Windows, first open the Command Prompt. To do this, press the Windows key + R, type “cmd” into the Run box and then press enter. The Command Prompt window will then open.

Once the Command Prompt window is open, type the command “fsutil file createnew” followed by the name of the file you wish to create. For example, if you wanted to create a file named “MyFile”, the command would be “fsutil file createnew MyFile”.

Once the command has been entered and executed, the file will be created in the same directory that you are currently in. To verify that the file has been created, type “dir” into the command prompt window and press enter. The file should be listed in the directory listing.

If you wish to create a file in a different directory, you can do so by typing the full path of the directory followed by the command to create a new file. For example, if you wanted to create a file in the “C:\\MyFolder” directory, the command would be “fsutil file createnew C:\\MyFolder\\MyFile”.

Once the file has been created, it will be empty and can then be used for whatever purpose you wish. This could include storing data, as part of a script, or as a placeholder for a file that has yet to be created.

Creating an empty file from the command line in Windows is a useful skill for any IT administrator to have. It can help streamline many of the tasks associated with managing large networks, saving time and resources, as well as potentially increasing system security.
