Fio results for USB drive are too fast on Windows

As an IT administrator, it’s important to understand the performance of your storage devices. This is especially true when it comes to USB drives, which can often be subject to varying performance depending on the type and configuration.

One of the best ways to test the performance of a USB drive is to use a benchmarking tool, such as FIO (Flexible I/O Tester). FIO is a command line utility that provides detailed information on disk performance, including disk latency, bandwidth, and throughput.

Unfortunately, when running FIO on a USB drive, some users have reported results that seem too fast. This is often because FIO is unable to accurately measure the performance of a USB drive, as the USB protocol does not include any performance metrics.

To get an accurate performance measurement of a USB drive, it’s best to use a different benchmarking tool, such as HD Tune Pro. HD Tune Pro is a commercial utility designed to measure hard drive performance, including read and write speeds, response times, and transfer rates.

When running HD Tune Pro on a USB drive, users should ensure that the drive is set to the highest performance mode. This can be done by right-clicking on the drive and selecting “Properties”, then clicking on the “Performance” tab. From here, the user should select the “High Performance” option.

Once the drive is set to the highest performance mode, users should run the benchmarking utility. This will provide results that are more accurate and closer to the true performance of the USB drive.

It’s important to note that even when running a benchmarking utility such as HD Tune Pro, the results may still be higher than expected. This is because USB performance is largely dependent on many factors, such as the type and speed of the USB port, the type of device connected to the port, and the cable length.

In summary, as an IT administrator, it’s important to understand the performance of your storage devices. To accurately measure the performance of a USB drive, it’s best to use a benchmarking tool such as HD Tune Pro, and ensure that the drive is set to the highest performance mode. Even then, the results may still be higher than expected due to the varying factors that affect USB performance.
