Find NetBIOS/WINS name of a IP

NetBIOS (Network Basic Input/Output System) is a protocol designed to allow applications to communicate over a local area network (LAN) or a wide area network (WAN). It is a low-level protocol that is used for communication between applications on different computers. It is especially useful for applications that need to send data between computers that are not connected directly to the same LAN.

NetBIOS is based on Client/Server architecture and uses a name server, called WINS (Windows Internet Naming Service), to provide name resolution services. This allows computers to be addressed by a name rather than an IP address.

The WINS name of a computer can be found by performing a WINS query. This is done by sending a query to the WINS server which will return the name of the computer associated with the specified IP address.

There are several ways to perform a WINS query. On Windows systems, you can use the command line utility NBTSTAT (NetBIOS over TCP/IP Statistics). NBTSTAT is a tool that can be used to query the status of remote computers, such as the WINS name. To use it, open a command prompt and type:

nbtstat -a

where is the IP address of the computer you want to find the WINS name for.

Another way to query for the WINS name of a computer is to use the nslookup utility. To use it, open a command prompt and type:

nslookup -type=WINS

where is the IP address of the computer you want to find the WINS name for.

You can also use the graphical user interface to query for the WINS name of a computer. In Windows, open the Network and Sharing Center and then click on Change adapter settings. Right-click on the adapter and select Properties. In the Properties window, select the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click on Properties. In the Properties window, select Advanced and then select the WINS tab. Click Add and enter the IP address of the computer you want to find the WINS name for. Click OK and then OK again. The WINS name of the computer should now be displayed.

In some cases, the WINS name of a computer may not be available. This is usually due to a misconfiguration or a firewall that is blocking the query. If the WINS name is not available, you can use the IP address of the computer to access its resources.

NetBIOS and WINS are powerful tools for communication between applications on different computers. It is important to understand how they work and how to query for the WINS name of a computer in order to ensure that your applications are able to communicate properly.
