Cisco IOS Forward / reverse name lookups

As an IT administrator, you may find yourself needing to perform name lookups in Cisco IOS. There are two types of name lookups that you can use: forward name lookup and reverse name lookup.

Forward name lookup is used to resolve a hostname to an IP address. This is useful for troubleshooting network issues, such as determining the IP address of a website or a server. To perform a forward name lookup, use the command “ping hostname”. This will send a ping request to the specified hostname and return the IP address of the hostname.

Reverse name lookup is used to resolve an IP address to a hostname. This is useful for troubleshooting network issues, such as determining the hostname of a server or a website. To perform a reverse name lookup, use the command “nslookup ip-address”. This will send a DNS query to the specified IP address and return the hostname of the IP address.

In addition to performing forward and reverse name lookups, you can also use the traceroute command. This command is used to trace the route of a packet from source to destination, and can be used to troubleshoot network issues. To use traceroute, use the command “traceroute hostname”. This will send a packet to the specified hostname and return the route of the packet.

When performing forward and reverse name lookups, be sure to use the correct syntax. For example, when performing a forward name lookup, use the command “ping hostname”. If you use the command “nslookup hostname”, the command won’t work. Similarly, when performing a reverse name lookup, use the command “nslookup ip-address”. If you use the command “ping ip-address”, the command won’t work.

It is also important to note that name lookups can take a few seconds to complete. If the name lookup is taking too long, you may need to troubleshoot the issue further. Make sure that the DNS server is configured correctly and that the hostname is valid.

In summary, forward and reverse name lookups are useful for troubleshooting network issues. You can use the ping and nslookup commands to perform name lookups, and the traceroute command to trace the route of a packet. When performing name lookups, be sure to use the correct syntax and remember that name lookups can take some time to complete.
