Can't mount Windows shares by name, only IP

When it comes to accessing Windows shares, being able to mount them by name is essential. Unfortunately, it is not always a straightforward process, and many users find themselves unable to mount Windows shares by name only. This can be particularly frustrating, as the only alternative is to use the IP address, which makes accessing the share more difficult and inconvenient.

The most common reason why you cannot mount Windows shares by name only is because of an issue with the DNS server. In order for the computer to be able to access the share by name, it needs to be able to resolve the name to the correct IP address. If the DNS server is not able to do this, then the computer will not be able to locate the share.

In order to resolve this issue, you will need to make sure that the DNS server is configured correctly. The first step is to make sure that the DNS server is able to resolve the name of the Windows share. You can use the nslookup command to do this. Type “nslookup ”, where is the name of the Windows share. If the command returns the correct IP address, then the DNS server is configured correctly.

If the nslookup command does not return the correct IP address, then you will need to make sure that the DNS server is configured correctly. This can be done by checking the DNS server settings. Make sure that the server is pointed to the correct DNS servers and that it is able to resolve the Windows share name.

Once you have confirmed that the DNS server is configured correctly, you can try to mount the Windows share by name. If you are still unable to mount the share, then you may need to configure the computer to use the same DNS server as the Windows share. To do this, open the Network and Sharing Center and select the Change adapter settings option. Select the network connection that is used to access the Windows share and then select the Properties option. Select the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) option and then click the Properties button. Select the Use the following DNS server addresses option and then enter the IP address of the DNS server that the Windows share is using.

Once you have configured the computer to use the same DNS server as the Windows share, you should be able to mount the share by name. If you are still unable to mount the share, then you may need to check the permissions on the Windows share. Make sure that the user that is trying to access the share has the correct permissions to do so. If the user does not have the correct permissions, then you will need to grant them the necessary permissions.

In conclusion, being able to mount Windows shares by name is essential for accessing the share. If you are unable to mount the share by name, then you may need to check the DNS server configuration, configure the computer to use the same DNS server as the Windows share, or check the permissions on the Windows share. Once these steps have been completed, you should be able to mount the Windows share by name.
