Can I change where win7 shortcuts sort in relation to folders?

As an IT administrator, it is important to understand how shortcuts in Microsoft Windows 7 are sorted in relation to folders. This is an important factor when creating a user-friendly and efficient file structure for users.

The default sorting behavior for Windows 7 is to display folders first, and then shortcuts in alphabetical order below the folders. This behavior can be changed in the Desktop folder. To do this, open the folder, then click View > Sort By > Type. This will cause the folder to display all shortcuts before the folders, in alphabetical order.

It is also possible to control the sorting of shortcuts using a registry key. To do this, open the registry editor (Run > regedit) and navigate to the following key:

HKCU\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer\\

Once there, scroll to the bottom and locate the SortOrderIndex value. This value determines the order in which shortcuts are displayed. By default, it is set to 0, which causes shortcuts and folders to be displayed together in alphabetical order. If you set this value to 1, shortcuts will be displayed first, followed by folders.

Finally, you can control the sorting behavior of shortcuts using a group policy. To do this, open the Group Policy Editor (Run > gpedit.msc) and navigate to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Explorer. Under this folder, locate the Show All File Types option and set it to Enabled. This will cause all file types to be displayed in alphabetical order, including shortcuts.

In summary, as an IT administrator it is important to understand how Windows 7 sorts shortcuts in relation to folders. The default behavior is to display folders first, followed by shortcuts in alphabetical order. However, this behavior can be changed by using the Sort By Type option in the Desktop folder, a registry key, or a group policy.
