Call but not download a page with wget

As an IT administrator, it is important to understand how to use the command-line utility wget, which is a very powerful tool for downloading files from the web. Wget is a command-line application that can be used to retrieve content from web servers. It is often used to download files from a variety of web sources, such as FTP and HTTP servers.

The basic syntax for using wget is as follows:

wget [options] [URL]

When using wget, you can use a variety of options to control how the download is performed. For example, if you want to only download a file if it has been modified since the last time it was downloaded, you can use the ‘-N’ option.

However, in some cases, you may want to call a page but not download it. This can be done with the ‘-c’ option. This option tells wget to make a connection to the server, but not download the content. Instead, it will just check the server to see if the file has been modified since the last time it was downloaded.

For example, if you want to check the status of a file on a web server, you can use the following command:

wget -c [URL]

This command will make a connection to the server, but not download the file. Instead, it will simply report if the file has been modified since the last download.

In addition to checking the status of a file on a web server, you can also use the ‘-I’ option with wget to check the headers of a particular URL. This can be useful if you want to check the response code of a web page without actually downloading the content.

To check the headers of a URL, you can use the following command:

wget -I [URL]

This command will make a connection to the server and retrieve the headers of the page. It will then display the response code, content type, and other information about the page.

Overall, wget is a very powerful tool for downloading files from the web. It can also be used to call a page, but not download it. This can be useful when you want to check the status of a file or the headers of a web page without downloading the content.
