Append to start of filename



As an IT admin, you may find yourself needing to append something to the start of a filename. This can be helpful if you want to organize files in a certain order, alphabetize them, or add a common identifier to the beginning of the filename.

Fortunately, there are several ways to do this and they are relatively simple. The method you use will depend on the type of file you are dealing with, as well as how many of them you need to rename.

If you only need to rename one or two files, you can use the Windows File Explorer. To do this, open the folder containing the files you want to rename in the File Explorer. Right-click on the file and select Rename from the menu. This will allow you to type the new name at the beginning of the filename.

If you need to rename a large number of files, you can use a batch file. To do this, create a text file with the following commands in it:

FOR %i IN (*.*) DO REN %i \PREFIX-%i\

This command will search the current directory for all files and rename them so that the desired prefix is added to the start of the filename. Replace “PREFIX” with the text you want to add.

You may also be able to use a third-party program to rename multiple files. There are a number of programs available, such as Bulk Rename Utility and File Renamer. These programs allow you to add a prefix to a large number of files easily and quickly.

Finally, you can use the command line. To do this, open the Command Prompt and navigate to the directory containing the files you want to rename. Then type the following command:

FOR %i IN (*.*) DO REN %i \PREFIX-%i\

Again, replace “PREFIX” with the text you want to add.

As you can see, there are several ways to add a prefix to the start of a filename as an IT admin. Depending on the number of files you need to rename and the type of file, you can use the Windows File Explorer, a batch file, a third-party program, or the command line. Whichever method you choose, it is a relatively simple process that can be helpful if you need to organize or alphabetize your files.
